CNA reported the ministry detected six PLA naval vessels, six government ships, and ten aircraft around Taiwan between 6 a.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday, with nine jets crossing the median line into Taiwan’s southwest and eastern air defense identification zone. The military said it scrambled mission aircraft and monitored the movements with shore-based missile systems, language Taipei uses whenever Beijing tests response times during diplomatic weeks.
The activity landed as Chinese President Xi Jinping prepared to travel to Washington for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, a summit Taiwanese officials watch for any hint that delayed U.S. arms packages could become bargaining chips.
Arms sales message in Tainan
Reuters quoted defense ministry deputy spokesperson Chiao Fu-chun telling reporters in Tainan that Taipei will keep close contact with the U.S. Department of War to implement approved sales on schedule. Trump signed an $11 billion package for Taiwan in December, the largest on record, but said in May after visiting Beijing that a second package worth about $14 billion remained on hold.
Chiao framed Indo-Pacific stability as a shared democratic interest and noted repeated U.S. congressional support for Taiwan’s self-defense, even as analysts speculate Xi will press Trump to freeze new notifications during this week’s meetings.
105mm gun debut
Focus Taiwan said the live-fire event showcased the 105mm mobile gun system, an eight-wheeled vehicle slated for mass production in 2027 with 178 units planned. Crews hit moving targets at 1.2 kilometers and stationary targets at one kilometer, then fired the coaxial machine gun alongside the main cannon to simulate repelling amphibious vehicles.
Officers told journalists the platform will receive anti-drone upgrades before serial production, reflecting lessons from Ukraine and from PLA exercises that increasingly pair air incursions with unmanned reconnaissance. The army also displayed U.S.-made HIMARS launchers without firing them, a reminder that foreign and local systems will operate side by side even as budgets shift toward indigenous designs.

Legislators from both major parties asked the executive branch for a public readout if Trump and Xi discuss Taiwan arms timelines. The presidential office has not scheduled a special security meeting, but the Mainland Affairs Council said any attempt to trade notifications for trade concessions would face cross-party resistance in Taipei.
