Uttar Pradesh’s relief machinery stayed on full alert Sunday after a sixty-hour monsoon burst left Farrukhabad recording roughly two hundred times its normal rainfall and Kanpur Nagar about one hundred sixty times, according to state bulletins. Official tallies now list 1,021 damaged houses, 56 deaths and 46 injuries, numbers that climbed through the holiday weekend as waterlogging shut roads and flash-flood advisories covered parts of the central Terai.

Where the gauges broke

The Relief Commissioner said above-normal rain hit 63 districts, with the state as a whole registering nineteen times its typical volume in the latest twenty-four-hour window. Kannauj, Kanpur Dehat and Hardoi also reported anomalies above one hundred thirty times normal, while Ghazipur logged the lowest totals in the same period. Nepal-border districts remain under special monitoring because upstream rain can swell rivers in eastern Uttar Pradesh, and magistrates there were told to watch gauge readings through the night.

India’s weather office warned of heavy to very heavy falls across several divisions, with isolated extremely heavy rain possible in the central Terai and a light to moderate flash-flood risk on some watersheds over the following day. Residents in low-lying blocks reported knee-deep water through Saturday night, and traffic crawled on flooded arterial routes into Lucknow. Power crews in several blocks reported intermittent outages where water reached feeder lines, though statewide totals were still being compiled Sunday afternoon.

Relief orders from Lucknow

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to pay compensation immediately for deaths, livestock losses and collapsed homes, warning that delays would not be tolerated. He ordered district magistrates to shift families into shelters where houses failed, assess crop damage and keep senior officers in the field rather than at desks.

Relief teams drew on fire services, provincial armed constabulary and civil defence volunteers, the commissioner’s office said. Damage surveys continued Sunday as crews documented 117 additional house impacts in a forty-eight-hour window cited in overnight briefings, a subset of the larger 1,021-home count compiled since the burst began.

Politics on flooded roads

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav posted video of waterlogging on the Ganga Expressway, mocking the project as a “waterway” and blaming the administration for poor drainage. BSP leader Mayawati urged all state governments to support families hit by heavy rain, citing earlier fatalities before the toll rose again on Sunday.

Those attacks do not change the immediate forecast: more rain bands across Uttar Pradesh with rivers in the east on watch. Veterinary teams were asked to document livestock losses alongside human casualties so compensation lists could move in parallel. For households in Farrukhabad and the Kanpur belt, the breaking issue is not the argument on social media but whether shelter lists, cash transfers and flood alerts reach blocks before the next downpour.
