NBN Co began a low-earth-orbit satellite backup trial for retailers on Alice Springs’ main shopping strip on Monday, testing whether a Starlink-class link can keep EFTPOS and reservation systems alive when terrestrial fibre routes fail in the Red Centre.

The pilot covers Todd Mall traders who lost hours of card connectivity during a spring maintenance window in August, when a fibre backhaul fault coincided with a surge in tourist traffic. NBN executives said the trial does not replace Sky Muster for homesteads, but it could serve as a rapid failover for small business precincts that already have fixed-line NBN.

How the failover works

Under the configuration, a compact LEO terminal mounted on a mall services roof maintains a standby link to NBN’s business gateway. When monitors detect packet loss on the primary fibre service, traffic is supposed to swing to the satellite path within minutes. Jade Chen’s desk watched technicians run a scripted outage Monday morning; participating cafes reported card authorisations completing over the backup within eight minutes.

Alice Springs was chosen because it combines long fibre spans, extreme heat that stresses outdoor cabinets, and a tourism economy that cannot afford another full-day outage during school holidays. Similar trials in Western Queensland informed the architecture, though those sites relied more on fixed wireless as the primary access technology.

Regulatory and cost questions

The Australian Communications and Media Authority will need to sign off on any permanent deployment because LEO terminals share spectrum with other satellite services. Retailers on the trial receive subsidised hardware, but NBN has not published a retail tariff if the backup becomes a paid product. Telstra and Optus operate their own LEO resale agreements, raising questions about whether NBN should compete with its wholesale customers in town centres.

Consumer advocates said failover kits are useless unless staff are trained to reboot point-of-sale terminals after a path switch. The Communications Alliance urged NBN to publish a public dashboard of failover events so regulators can see whether satellite backup is a band-aid for under-maintained fibre.

Broader context

The trial lands the same week cabinet is scheduled to discuss legacy government IT after the OpenAI Medicare statistics incident, a reminder that connectivity and security failures often share root causes in ageing infrastructure. For Alice Springs traders, the stakes are simpler: keep card payments alive when the desert heat knocks out a conduit.

NBN will report initial metrics to the federal communications minister in October. If latency and jitter stay within payments-industry tolerances, the company may expand the model to other regional CBD strips before the wet season brings lightning damage to overhead lines in the north.
