AEON Financial Service opened an October cashback lane on its Signature Visa cards for Costco Japan warehouse charges, paying an elevated rebate on in-club spend when transactions post through the issuer's warehouse-club merchant category before the promo window closes on October 31.

How the lane works

Cardholders who enroll in the October warehouse promo through AEON's mobile app receive 3 percent cashback on eligible Costco Japan receipts, capped at 6,000 yen for the month. Base Signature Visa rewards continue on other categories, but double-dipping with AEON mall point campaigns is blocked when the warehouse lane is active. AEON said enrollment is opt-in to satisfy Consumer Affairs Agency guidance on limited-time reward boosts.

Costco Japan operates a dozen warehouses nationwide, with Yokohama and Kisarazu drawing heavy Tokyo commuter traffic. Warehouse clubs sit outside AEON's own retail orbit, making the co-brand deal a customer-acquisition play rather than a captive-mall cross-sell.

Who benefits and who does not

The lane targets households already holding Costco memberships who consolidated spending onto a single travel-and-warehouse card. AEON Financial's fee schedule on Signature Visa includes a 11,000-yen annual membership for primary cards; the October cap means heavy shoppers max the promo around 200,000 yen in club spend unless they split purchases across household cards.

Competing issuers Rakuten Card and Sumitomo Mitsui's Platinum Preferred run evergreen warehouse-category bonuses at lower rates without monthly caps, but AEON's October spike may win switchers who time bulk buying around the Golden Week-adjacent restock season.

Fine print auditors flag

Returns and partial refunds claw back cashback in the following statement cycle, AEON's terms say. Gift-card purchases inside Costco lanes are excluded, mirroring industry practice to prevent manufactured spend. Foreign-membership Costco charges outside Japan do not qualify even if billed in yen through dynamic currency conversion.

Customer service scripts reviewed by card bloggers note that co-branded AEON Costco cards issued under older agreements follow legacy earn tables unless holders migrate to Signature Visa, a migration step that requires credit re-review.

Why October timing matters

Issuers often stack warehouse promos ahead of holiday inventory builds and winter fuel bulk buys. AEON Financial's parent AEON Co. reports consolidated earnings in November; elevated card spend in October helps loan-loss and interchange revenue lines even if reward costs rise. Card analysts will watch October 31 enrollment counts in the issuer's next service metrics disclosure for signs the lane moved share from rival platinum products.
