The Ministry of Health deployed oseltamivir stock to 120 Guardian outlets on Thursday after sentinel surveillance showed H3N2 driving polyclinic waits past 90 minutes at Bukit Batok, Hougang, and Marine Parade clusters.
Who qualifies
The retail channel is limited to patients aged 18 to 64 with mild symptoms within 48 hours of onset who already hold positive rapid test results from supervised clinics. Pharmacists must document consultations in the national electronic health record proxy system; antibiotics are not dispensed under the protocol. Elderly patients and children still route to polyclinics or GPs for dosing checks, MOH emphasised in a circular to clinic managers overnight.
Why pharmacies now
NCID modellers warned that concurrent dengue admissions are squeezing isolation beds, making it preferable to keep low-risk flu cases out of physical waiting rooms. Guardian and Watsons signed memoranda last year for pandemic antiviral surge plans; this activation is the first influenza-only rollout. Stocks are reallocated from national reserves, not new procurement, so shelf availability may differ by mall location.
GP network response
Private clinics asked whether pharmacy dispensing will siphon consult fees; MOH said participating GPs can charge telehealth screening fees if they issue the required rapid test documentation. The Singapore Medical Association urged members to watch for patients with chest pain or dehydration who need escalation despite mild initial presentations.
Public behaviour
Mask wearing on MRT remains voluntary but MOH posters reappeared at interchange stations after school-holiday travel surged. Employers should keep sick-leave policies flexible; the pharmacy route does not produce medical certificates unless pharmacists refer patients back to doctors. Households stocking home kits should check expiry dates after 2025’s bulk purchases.
Duration
The ministry said the pharmacy channel runs at least two weeks, reviewed weekly against polyclinic load and wholesale antiviral inventory. If waits fall below 45 minutes at the three trigger sites, shipments pause. For residents, the practical effect is shorter paths for confirmed mild flu; for the system, it is a pressure valve while dengue and influenza compete for the same front-line nurses.
Vaccination still primary
MOH reiterated that subsidised flu jabs for seniors and vulnerable groups remain the first-line defence; pharmacy antivirals treat illness after exposure, not replace prevention. School-based vaccination teams resume visits next week, and employers with on-site clinics were asked to book additional sessions if absenteeism crosses departmental thresholds. Watsons outlets not on the initial 120-store list may receive stock in a second wave if Guardian shelves deplete faster than forecast.
