Capital One kept the Venture X Rewards Credit Card at a $395 annual fee this fall while Chase and American Express pushed several flagship travel cards above $800, a split that matters if you are deciding whether to keep a premium card before your renewal statement closes.
Chase raised the Sapphire Reserve to $795 for new applicants and October renewals, and American Express priced the U.S. Platinum Card at $895 in its latest fee table, according to issuer disclosures and card-comparison sites that track September 2026 pricing. Capital One has not matched that climb on Venture X, which still bundles a $300 annual travel credit, Priority Pass visits, and 2x miles on everyday spending for the same $395 fee that helped the card win share during the last repricing cycle.
What changed at competing issuers
Chase’s September refresh also doubled the annual fee on its Air Canada Aeroplan card to $195 and sent October mailers to IHG hotel cardholders warning that Premier annual fees will rise from $99 to $150 in 2027, with a new $350 Premier Select tier for travelers chasing suite upgrades. Those moves follow the Federal Reserve’s September rate hike, which lifted prime-linked purchase APRs on cards tied to the U.S. prime rate and made carried balances more expensive even when annual fees stay flat.
For Venture X holders, the practical question is whether the $300 travel credit, 10,000 anniversary miles, and lounge access still clear the fee after you subtract credits you will actually use. Capital One applies the travel credit to purchases coded as travel through its portal or as airlines, hotels, and rental cars when booked elsewhere, but unused credits do not roll over, so a year without long-haul trips can leave value on the table.
When a downgrade beats a cancel
If the math fails, issuers often allow a product change to a no-fee card in the same family instead of a full closure, which preserves your account age and credit limit. Chase, American Express, and Capital One typically refund an annual fee if you downgrade or close within about 30 days of the fee posting, though policies vary and phone agents sometimes quote different windows, so confirm the deadline on the statement that shows the charge.
Households carrying multiple premium cards may also split roles: keep one lounge card for international trips and move everyday spend to a no-fee cash-back product until you know how much you will fly in 2027. With IHG and Aeroplan fees rising on different calendars, October is a reasonable month to list each renewal date, expected credits, and the purchase APR you pay if a vacation balance lingers past the grace period.
What to do before your statement closes
Pull the last 12 months of rewards and credits from the issuer app, not from memory. Compare that total with the posted annual fee plus any interest you paid on the same account. If you are within the refund window and the net cost is negative, call the number on the back of the card and ask about product-change options before you request a cancellation that might trim your available credit overnight.
Capital One’s unchanged Venture X fee does not stop other banks from raising prices on companion cards you already hold. Treat the $395 line as a benchmark, not a guarantee, and set a calendar reminder 45 days before each renewal so you are not deciding under deadline pressure at checkout.
How purchase APR fits the fee math
Annual fees are only half the household cost if you sometimes carry a balance. Prime-linked cards reset purchase APRs after the Fed’s September hike, so a $3,000 vacation charge that takes six months to pay off can generate more interest than a waived fee would have saved. Run the same spreadsheet for every card in your wallet, not just the premium product you are debating.
Capital One publishes Venture X benefit terms in its online benefits guide; screenshot the travel credit categories before you book so you have evidence if a merchant code posts as something other than travel. If you rely on authorized users for lounge entry, confirm whether their visits count against the same Priority Pass allocation.
