Foreign institutional investors piled into AUO Corp. on the final session before Taiwan’s October earnings parade, lifting the panel maker 5.61% and helping the TAIEX finish at a record 48,475.74 as traders positioned for guidance from optical and memory suppliers.
Friday’s tape
Taiwan’s weighted index added 122.25 points, or 0.25%, on turnover near NT$900 billion, according to exchange data cited by SETN. AUO ended at NT$40.45 after foreign brokers bought more than 81,000 lots, the largest single-name foreign purchase on the board. Powerchip Technology and Formosa Plastics Group affiliates also landed on the foreign buy list, while several electronics assemblers appeared among the top sells as funds trimmed positions into the long weekend.
Investment trusts, meanwhile, favored financial holding companies and select panel names, a split that desk strategists said reflected caution about fourth-quarter handset builds even as AI-server demand stays firm.
Earnings calendar
The Economic Daily News reported that Largan Precision opens the optics-heavy week on Oct. 8, followed by Nanya Technology on Oct. 12 and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. on Oct. 15. Brokerage consensus compiled by local media puts TSMC’s third-quarter earnings per share between NT$28.5 and NT$30, which would mark another quarterly high if realized.
Desk analysts expect September revenue prints — due throughout the week — to show more than 150 listed companies posting monthly highs, with aggregate Taiwan listings potentially crossing NT$6 trillion in combined September sales for the first time. Apple and Nvidia supply-chain names remain the focus, but Friday’s AUO block activity shows investors are also hunting for lagging panel beta ahead of holiday-season TV orders.
Index psychology
After futures briefly breached 49,000 in the overnight session, local strategists debated whether the cash market would chase that handle before TSMC reports. Several noted that foreign net buying has been positive in recent sessions but concentrated in a handful of liquidity-rich names, leaving mid-cap optical suppliers sensitive to any earnings miss.
Domestic mutual funds continued to rotate into financials, a hedge against volatility if U.S. jobs data reprice Fed expectations. For retail investors watching the record close, the more immediate question is whether October’s “super earnings week” extends the rally or unlocks profit-taking into year-end index-linked products.
What to watch Monday
Traders will track U.S. semiconductor ADRs after the Sunday open, along with any pre-announcements from companies with September revenue releases scheduled for Tuesday. AUO’s foreign inflow may set the tone for other panel makers if handset lens pricing commentary from Largan surprises to the upside.
Until those numbers land, the TAIEX’s path toward 49,000 rests on whether Friday’s foreign buying broadens beyond a single block trade — a test the market faces as soon as cash trading resumes.
