Brisbane Heat ended a contract standoff by re-signing Chris Lynn for BBL|16 on a one-year deal, Queensland Cricket announced Monday, returning the competition’s all-time leading run-scorer to the Gabba twelve months after his Adelaide Strikers stint expired.

Negotiation backdrop

Lynn, 36, had been uncontracted since BBL|15 despite topping the Strikers’ run charts in finals week. Heat chief executive Terry Svenson said talks stalled over availability windows—Lynn still takes short UAE T20 gigs—but both sides agreed to a reduced overseas leave clause after Michael Neser and Usman Khawaja committed to longer home blocks.

Squad fit

Heat’s retained list for BBL|16 already includes Spencer Johnson, Xavier Bartlett and Matt Renshaw on multi-year deals, with Khawaja captaining after Marnus Labuschagne’s one-season cameo ended. Lynn slots into a middle order that lacked a dedicated six-hitter after Jimmy Peirson shifted to the Scorchers off-season trade rumour mill quieted.

Coach James Hopes said Lynn will bat primarily at four or five rather than open, letting Max Bryant and Tim Robinson attack powerplays. Fitness staff cleared Lynn’s chronic shoulder management plan after a winter of net sessions at Allan Border Field.

Fan and commercial angle

Membership renewals had softened when Lynn’s return looked unlikely, according to club surveys cited in the announcement. Retail partners wanted his name on Gabba marquees for the December 23 home opener against the Strikers—the same fixture where Lynn first faced his former club after the 2022 split.

Cricket Australia must still register the contract under the salary cap, but Lynn is outside the Australian central contract pool, simplifying paperwork. If he passes fitness tests, he could feature in the Marsh Cup lead-in matches as a batting consultant for younger Heat batters.

For Lynn, the move is a home-town swansong option: he has not ruled out commentary transition after BBL|16, but told local radio he wanted one more summer hearing the Gabba crowd when he connects from the long boundary.

Ticket packages for the Gabba opener go on sale Wednesday, with Heat members receiving a 48-hour presale window. Broadcasters confirmed the Strikers reunion match will air nationally on Fox Cricket, reprising the ratings bump from Lynn’s first Adelaide return in BBL|12.

Sponsorship partners including a Queensland bank and a regional brewery said they would feature Lynn in summer campaigns only if he plays at least eight home fixtures, a clause that reflects his managed availability but also shows commercial demand for the comeback narrative.
