Taiwan’s weighted index added 412.18 points Friday to finish at 27,812.44, a fourth straight record close driven by TSMC and AI hardware names while bank and insurance shares barely moved. The Taiwan Stock Exchange said five-day average turnover fell to NT$478.6 billion, a pattern dealers described as price gains on lighter participation after the Mid-Autumn break.

Who carried the index

TSMC rose 2.8 percent to NT$1,425, contributing more than half the index points according to exchange data. Memory makers Nanya Technology and Winbond advanced on foreign buy orders, while server assemblers and power-supply names followed U.S. semiconductor gains overnight. The electronic components sub-index outpaced financials by nearly six percentage points, underscoring how concentrated the rally remains.

Volume tells a second story

Friday cash volume reached NT$412 billion, below the NT$450 billion average recorded in the final week of September. Dealers on the Xinyi brokerage row said retail accounts trimmed intraday trades even as mutual funds held core TSMC positions. Foreign institutional investors bought a net NT$8.2 billion, modest compared with earlier September sessions above NT$20 billion.

Mid-caps lag

Traditional industrials and domestic retailers posted mixed results; several mid-cap plastics names fell as oil inputs rose. Analysts at a Taipei securities house noted that excluding TSMC, the cap-weighted index would have gained only about 110 points, a reminder that breadth remains narrow heading into October earnings preannouncements.

Derivatives and hedging

TX futures open interest climbed as portfolio managers rolled hedges before U.S. payroll data. Put-call ratios on weekly contracts ticked higher, suggesting some funds bought downside protection despite the headline rally. Market makers reported tighter spreads on top-five names but wider gaps on third-tier electronics suppliers.

Macro crosswinds

Traders cited a firmer U.S. dollar against the Taiwan dollar as a reason some exporters took profits into the close. Government bond yields in Taipei were steady, offering little competition for equity flows. Ministry of Finance officials reiterated that Taiwan’s export orders data due next week will be the next domestic macro checkpoint.

What Monday brings

Investors will watch whether TSMC can hold NT$1,400 on volume above 30,000 lots, a threshold brokers use to gauge long-holder confidence. Earnings guidance from optical and heat-sink suppliers could extend the AI chain rally or expose overbought readings on short-term oscillators. Until breadth improves, the record close is as much a liquidity test as a victory lap.
