E.Sun Bank revised October reward caps on three popular co-branded credit cards, limiting how much cashback cardholders can earn on cinema tickets and night-market purchases after redemption rates jumped during the summer travel season.

The bank posted updated terms Monday showing that its Uni-President co-brand, a cinema-focused card, and a night-market dining product now share a combined NT$800 monthly ceiling on bonus categories that previously allowed up to NT$1,200 before automatic throttling. Standard base rewards on groceries and transit were unchanged.

Why caps moved

In a notice to cardholders, E.Sun said merchant-funded promotions and higher contactless usage pushed average redemption per active account 22 percent above the bank's spring forecast. Spokespersons emphasized that the move protects interchange economics rather than signaling credit stress, noting that delinquency rates on Taiwan dollar balances remain near historic lows.

Consumer advocates said the change is a reminder to read footnotes on limited-time bonus categories. Ho Chih-yi, a counselor at the Financial Ombudsman Institution, urged cardholders to set calendar reminders before month-end enrollment windows close, especially when banks stack holiday campaigns on top of standing perks.

Peer issuers

Rival issuers have taken different approaches. Cathay United Bank kept higher caps on hotel spend tied to Double Ten travel but required minimum NT$30,000 monthly billing to unlock the top tier. CTBC Bank steered diners toward app-linked vouchers instead of open-ended cashback on street-food merchants.

Payment networks said contactless penetration at Taiwan's night markets surpassed 60 percent of transactions in Taipei city surveys this year, up from less than 40 percent in 2023. That shift makes small-ticket cashback attractive to consumers but costly when uncapped.

Practical tips for holders

E.Sun told customers they can still stack points with its mileage partners if cinema spend exceeds the cap, converting excess billing into airline currencies at published rates. The bank's mobile app will push alerts when a card reaches 80 percent of any monthly limit, a feature it rolled out after regulator guidance on transparent reward disclosures.

For households planning holiday outings, the takeaway is to map which card still offers the best net return once caps bite. With several issuers tweaking October sheets, the cheapest night out may depend as much on fine print as on the menu price.

Local context

University students running budgeting clubs said they will spreadsheet the new caps for members who stack cinema nights with food stalls.

Officials said they will publish another update after the Double Ten holiday, when agencies return to normal staffing and contractors can resume noisy work without conflicting with downtown ceremonies. Residents can sign up for text alerts through city portals if they want construction or traffic notices pushed to their phones.
