JioHotstar locked simultaneous streaming rights for a five-film Bollywood Diwali slate and will co-host premiere-night broadcasts with single-screen theatres in Indore, Patna and Coimbatore, the Disney-owned platform said Wednesday. The deal lets partner cinemas air the OTT feed on big screens at 8 p.m. local time while the service streams the same titles to subscribers nationwide.
Why theatres joined
Single-screen owners have lost footfall to multiplexes and piracy during past festival seasons. Revenue-share terms give halls 18 percent of ticket sales for simulcast nights plus concession upsells, according to two exhibitors who signed memorandums of understanding. JioHotstar gains marketing in cities where billboards still drive opening-weekend buzz.
Producers on the slate—unnamed until trailer drops next week—reportedly negotiated minimum guarantees tied to subscriber adds during the seven-day window. The platform declined to comment on fees.
Piracy and windowing
Film chambers have pressed streaming services to keep 28-day theatrical exclusivity on tentpoles. This experiment compresses the window to hours, raising leak concerns. JioHotstar said it will watermark feeds and throttle concurrent logins per household account on premiere night.
Audience split
Multiplex chains in metro markets are not part of the pilot, protecting their premium formats. Analysts said the real test is whether tier-two families who still treat cinema as a social outing will pay ₹120 for a simulcast seat when a ₹299 mobile plan already includes the stream.
For Bollywood, Diwali remains the annual balance-sheet holiday. If simulcasts lift rural reach without cannibalising urban box office, expect more hybrid deals in 2027. If leaks spike, producers will revert to hard windows faster than reviewers can post spoilers.
Distribution mechanics
Partner cinemas will receive encrypted satellite feeds with time locks so screenings cannot start before the streaming premiere. Technicians trained in Indore last weekend on failover procedures if monsoon clouds degrade the downlink, a real risk during evening shows.
Music rights holders negotiated separate sync fees for theatre speakers versus mobile streams, a split that delayed signing until Tuesday. Advertising slots on the OTT feed will still run nationally, but partner halls can opt out of video ads by paying a flat licence fee.
Exhibitor economics
Single-screen owners in Patna said simulcast nights could lift annual revenue by six to eight percent if families treat them like live events. They plan combo deals with nearby sweet shops for Diwali hampers, reviving a foot-traffic pattern multiplexes rarely replicate.
Critics on social media debated whether streaming premieres dilute star power, but trade analysts noted that satellite rights still sell for nine figures regardless of OTT timing. The experiment is as much about marketing JioHotstar in Bharat as about saving struggling halls.
