Samsung Electronics published preliminary third-quarter results on Thursday morning, reporting consolidated revenue of 204.8 trillion won and operating profit of 106.1 trillion won for the July–September period. The two-line release is the first time a Korean company has guided above 100 trillion won of quarterly operating profit, and it lands one day after the Kospi slid below 6,800 on pre-earnings caution.
What the filing contained
Regulatory practice limits the preliminary disclosure to consolidated sales and operating profit. Samsung did not break out memory, foundry, mobile, or display contributions, and executives do not hold a call until the full report due Oct. 29. Still, the magnitude confirms what analysts had telegraphed: memory pricing and high-bandwidth memory shipments are carrying the group while handset margins remain under component-cost pressure.
The guided revenue figure implies roughly 19 percent sequential growth from the 171.5 trillion won Samsung reported for the second quarter, when operating profit was 89.5 trillion won. On a year-on-year basis, the profit guide is about nine times the 12.1 trillion won operating profit Samsung posted in the third quarter of 2025, when the memory cycle was still climbing out of its trough.
Why chips overshadow everything else
Preview notes from multiple brokerages estimated that more than 99 percent of second-quarter operating profit already came from the device solutions division, with the mobile experience unit posting a small loss as memory costs rose inside phone bill of materials. Thursday’s consolidated guide does not prove that split held in the third quarter, but there is no division data yet to contradict it.
SK Securities analyst Han Dong-hee’s pre-release model pegged memory operating margins around 76 percent for the third quarter, flat quarter on quarter despite a stronger won. Samsung’s own commentary on HBM4 volume is expected only with the detailed release, though supply-chain checks cited in local trade press pointed to a sharp quarter-on-quarter jump in high-bandwidth memory revenue.
Market read-through in Seoul
Samsung shares had fallen with the broader semiconductor complex on Wednesday, closing down 1.98 percent at a level that left the Kospi at 6,803.90. Investors treated the preliminary guide as a validation event rather than a surprise: the LSEG SmartEstimate cluster sat near 106 trillion won before the filing, after analysts trimmed forecasts about 8 percent since late August on memory price moderation and currency moves.
Foreign investors had been net sellers of Samsung and SK hynix into the print, while retail accounts bought on the way down, according to Korea Exchange flow data cited in Wednesday’s session wraps. The preliminary numbers give arbitrage desks a hard anchor for index futures and for earnings revisions across the Kosdaq memory equipment chain.
What is still unknown
Capital expenditure, customer concentration for HBM stacks, and any update on Texas fab timelines stay off the table until late October. Net income, buyback cadence, and dividend policy are also absent from the preliminary sheet.
Samsung’s mobile division could return to profit on seasonality even if memory remains the earnings engine; without segment lines, fund managers are left modeling phone average selling prices from channel checks rather than audited figures. The same gap applies to display, where panel pricing has been volatile on large OLED orders.
Competitive and policy backdrop
SK hynix continues to compete for Nvidia-class HBM slots, and Korean export data show semiconductor shipments still rising in dollar terms even as unit growth moderates. Government industrial policy treats advanced packaging and materials as strategic, but Thursday’s filing is a corporate accounting event, not a subsidy announcement.
Analysts at NH Investment & Securities and Korea Investment & Securities both flagged fourth-quarter supply allocation as the next debate: whether Samsung can keep margin per bit as contract prices plateau. The preliminary guide answers the scale question for the third quarter; it does not settle the slope for the fourth.
Calendar for shareholders
Traders will watch whether Samsung issues formal fourth-quarter guidance with the Oct. 29 package or waits for the January earnings call. Options markets priced elevated implied volatility into Thursday’s session because the preliminary release coincided with index derivatives expiry and the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes.
For now, the headline is numeric: 204.8 trillion won of revenue and 106.1 trillion won of operating profit in a filing that fits on one screen. Everything else waits three weeks for the footnotes.
