JPMorgan Chase updated the disclosed purchase APR on 13 credit cards in one October 4 batch, 18 days after the Federal Reserve raised its policy rate on September 16, finally moving flagship Sapphire products that had sat unchanged while smaller Chase portfolios repriced earlier in the window.
What changed on your statement
Variable-rate Chase cards tie their APR to the prime rate plus a margin printed in your card agreement. When the Fed lifts the federal funds target, banks usually follow by raising prime, and variable APR floors and ceilings on existing accounts move on the next billing cycle after the issuer posts an update. Independent tracker SwitchWize logged 34 card APR range changes across five large issuers in the three weeks after the September meeting; Chase’s pattern was the messiest, with United Explorer moving on day eight, a mid-window cluster on day 11, and a final October 4 wave that included first-time hikes on Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, and IHG One Rewards Premier plus second adjustments on cards that had already moved once.
Wells Fargo, by contrast, touched all eight tracked variable cards within six days. The gap matters if you are carrying a balance: every day between the Fed action and Chase’s October 4 posting is interest computed on the old rate.
Who feels it first
Cardholders who revolve purchases—not travelers paying in full for points—take the hit. A 25-basis-point Fed move typically adds at least a quarter point to variable APR ranges; on a $4,000 balance at 22 percent, another 0.25 point is roughly $10 in extra annual interest, and Chase’s staggered rollout means some customers paid the old rate for half of September while others repriced twice within the same month.
Introductory 0 percent offers are unaffected until the promo ends; after that, the go-to variable rate is whatever Chase published on its product page after October 4. If you opened a Freedom Flex for the 15-month purchase APR holiday, the post-promo range is the number to watch on chase.com, not the teaser line in your welcome kit.
Rewards moved on a different calendar
October also brought marketing changes that do not touch APR: Chase cut Hyatt transfer ratios to four Chase points per three Hyatt points on October 1 and ended a 10 percent anniversary points bonus on several co-brands. Freedom Flex holders still need to activate Q4 5 percent categories—grocery stores, dining, and eligible American Red Cross donations through December 14—to earn the elevated cash back; dining stacks to 7 percent when the quarterly bonus is active. Those perks are irrelevant if you are financing groceries at a higher variable rate because you did not pay the statement in full.
What to do before November charges
Pull the “interest charge calculation” box on your October statement and compare it to September; if the daily periodic rate rose, your issuer has already applied the new APR. Pay down revolving balances before the November close if you can, or move debt to a still-open 0 percent balance-transfer window only after reading the transfer fee and the rate that applies to new purchases on the same card.
Call Chase only if the posted APR does not match the range on the product page for your card type—billing errors happen, but a Fed-linked increase is usually correct. For a new card, the Schumer box on the application reflects the current range; existing customers live with change-in-terms notices mailed or emailed when APRs shift.
Why issuers stagger
Operations teams batch system updates; legal reviews product-by-product. Chase’s wide catalog makes same-day repricing harder than at monoline issuers. The practical lesson for households is not which bank is slowest, but that “Fed week” headlines do not mean your card repriced that week. Tyler Brooks’s desk treats October 4 as the Chase catch-up date for premium travel cards after September’s hike—check your own issuer’s disclosure page if you hold Citi, Discover, or Barclays plastic, because their calendars differed from Chase’s six-wave rollout.
If you use autopay for the statement balance, APR moves are academic until you slip into revolving status during the holidays. Set alerts for when the statement posts and confirm the payment amount covers new charges plus any prior balance so you do not finance December at the repriced rate.
