Indian Railways’ Tatkal window opened at 10:00 AM on Saturday and the Howrah–Chennai Coromandal Express sold every AC three-tier berth in four minutes and twelve seconds, according to IRCTC transaction logs reviewed by InfoHandle Network. The rush is less about a single train and more about the Puja return corridor: families leaving Kolkata for Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh employers are competing for the same 1,280-kilometre overnight run that also feeds Chennai’s port belt.
Why Coromandal clears first
The Coromandal is one of the few daily superfast services on the South Eastern Railway that offers a full AC three-tier rake without a lengthy wait-list on the opening day of Tatkal. Agents in Howrah’s main reservation complex said most buyers were not leisure travellers but contract workers whose employers reimburse only confirmed berths, not RAC tickets. When the quota vanished, wait-list numbers on the same train jumped past 180 within an hour.
IRCTC’s dynamic pricing layer added ₹320–₹480 to several Tatkal slabs before the sell-out, but agents said the bigger friction was payment timeouts on the mobile app. Customers who failed UPI authentication once often lost their place in the queue when the page refreshed. Eastern Railway officials urged passengers to complete eKYC on the IRCTC profile before the Monday Tatkal drop for the Diwali week.
Airlines hold fares as rail chokes
Carriers including IndiGo and Air India kept Delhi–Mumbai economy caps near ₹8,900 for mid-October departures even as forward bookings rose 11 percent week on week, according to fare trackers cited by travel desks. The restraint contrasts with Tatkal, where no price ceiling exists beyond the base fare plus dynamic charges. Several airlines added narrow-body frequencies on Kolkata–Hyderabad and Kolkata–Bengaluru sectors to absorb spillover demand from rail passengers who could not secure berths.
State transport corporations in West Bengal and Odisha also reported higher advance bookings on AC Volvo services to Visakhapatnam and Chennai, though operators cautioned that highway toll plazas slow overnight buses during festival weekends. For many households the choice is not rail versus air but rail versus an extra day of unpaid leave: a confirmed Coromandal berth saves a Monday morning shift for factory staff near Sriperumbudur.
What changes next week
Railway officials said an additional special train pairing Howrah with Chennai Central is likely to be announced before October 17 if wait-lists on Coromandal and the corresponding Chennai–Howrah service stay above 150. Until then, agents recommend monitoring the PNR prediction tool after 8:00 PM, when cancellations from confirmed passengers often reopen Tatkal inventory in small batches. The Puja calendar makes this weekend’s sell-out a preview of Diwali week, when the same corridor is expected to choke again unless special rakes are deployed early.
Digital vs counter demand
IRCTC said 62 percent of Saturday’s Tatkal purchases on the Coromandal originated on mobile, up from 54 percent last year, but agents at Howrah still processed long queues for passengers who needed berths on connecting trains to Tirupati and Vijayawada. Dynamic pricing revenue on the route rose 9 percent year on year, funds Eastern Railway plans to reinvest in coach refurbishment rather than fare cuts. Passengers without smart phones can still use the 139 helpline, though hold times stretched past twenty minutes after the sell-out.
