South Indian cinema’s festival-season box office gets another jolt on Thursday when Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 opens wide, arriving days after Hindi screens absorbed record crowds for Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam: The Conclusion.

Sun Pictures is positioning the sequel as a theatrical event across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and overseas diaspora markets, with cameo-heavy marketing that references the first film’s 2023 success. Pinkvilla and trade trackers list the release date as 15 October 2026, alongside a cast that includes Vijay Sethupathi and Mohanlal in guest appearances according to promotional material cited by entertainment press.

A crowded October calendar

October has already been reshaped by Devgn’s franchise closer, which opened on 2 October and reportedly crossed ₹65 crore domestically on its first day, prompting other studios to shift dates. Ayushmann Khurrana’s spy comedy Udta Teer moved from 9 October to 23 October, with producers citing the need for a cleaner screen count after Drishyam’s run, MensXP reported. Rajkummar Rao’s Prahaar and Yami Gautam’s Nayyi Navelli remain on 16 October, sandwiching Jailer 2’s Thursday debut.

Multiplex chains will watch advance booking in Hyderabad and Bengaluru as much as in Tamil Nadu. Telugu audiences have been split between the West Indies cricket series and re-runs of earlier Rajinikanth hits on satellite, so walk-up sales on opening weekend will test whether star power still overrides streaming availability.

What audiences expect

The first Jailer mixed prison drama with action set pieces and social commentary on power and impunity; sequel marketing has emphasised higher production scale without revealing full plot twists. Sun Pictures has booked IMAX and Dolby screens in major metros, betting that fans will pay premium ticket prices for stunt choreography shown in trailers. Critics’ screenings are limited, keeping social media reaction as the primary word-of-mouth channel until Friday morning reviews land.

For distributors, the stakes extend to 2027 slates: a strong Jailer 2 performance keeps Sun Pictures’ overseas minimum guarantees healthy, while a soft opening could push producers to sell more titles directly to platforms after a four-week theatrical window.

Beyond Thursday

Moviegoers planning a single theatre trip this week face a genuine menu—Tamil action on Thursday, Hindi biopic and horror-comedy on Friday, and another wave of Hindi releases on 23 October. Jailer 2’s first Monday gross will signal whether the south belt can carry two mega releases in one month or whether Devgn has already tapped the discretionary spend pool.
