Wipro launched a Hindi voice crop-advisory agent at 120 IFFCO Kisan Kendra outlets in Uttar Pradesh, using its ai360 stack to answer fertiliser-timing questions and read aloud soil-moisture sensor data uploaded by local agronomists.
How the pilot works
Store assistants tap a tablet icon to wake the agent, which pulls district-level weather from the India Meteorological Department and cross-checks IFFCO's product catalogue. Farmers can ask open-ended questions; the model cites extension bulletins rather than inventing dosages, Wipro executives said.
Queries stay on-device for 24 hours before deletion, a concession to MeitY's draft AI data rules. IFFCO staff can flag a bad answer, triggering a human agronomist callback within 48 hours.
Commercial terms
Wipro is charging IFFCO a per-store subscription rather than a per-query fee, people familiar with the contract said. If accuracy stays above 90% on audited transcripts, IFFCO may extend the rollout to 400 stores before December.
The agent does not process payments; UPI sales still run through IFFCO's billing system. Wipro said it trained the model on 18,000 anonymised call-centre transcripts from the 2024 kharif season.
Broader AI race
Infosys pitched a similar agent to three public-sector undertakings last week under MeitY's sandbox route. Tata Consultancy Services markets agritech large-language models to cooperatives in Maharashtra. For Wipro, the IFFCO deal is a reference win as it tries to lift AI services revenue above $2 billion annualized.
Researchers caution that voice agents are only as good as soil-test data. IFFCO said it will publish weekly accuracy scores on an internal portal, with a public dashboard promised after the rabi season.
Context for readers
Market participants said the development fits a broader pattern of festive-season positioning across Indian assets, even as global rate paths stay uncertain. Local regulators have urged transparency in customer communications, and several industry groups plan briefings next week.
Analysts cautioned that one session does not reset the trend, pointing to derivative positioning and currency moves as nearer-term drivers. Still, domestic institutions appear willing to support names with clear earnings visibility through the holiday calendar.
Looking ahead
Next week's data calendar includes macro prints and corporate updates that could confirm or challenge Friday's move. Investors said they will watch foreign flows, especially after recent volatility in heavyweight financials.
For households, the practical impact may show up in product pricing, credit terms, or service availability rather than headlines alone. Officials have not announced additional measures, but desks are monitoring any follow-up circulars.
