Apple’s first foldable iPhone Duo exhausted day-one preorder slots in Taiwan on Thursday, with major carriers listing delivery windows stretching into late January 2026 as hinge and flexible-display yields constrain supply.
Carrier queues and scalper watch
Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, and Far EasTone opened online queues at midnight, mirroring mainland China where e-commerce platforms showed ship dates into late January. Apple’s Taiwan site displayed a three-to-four-week wait for 512-gigabyte models in titanium black, while 1-terabyte colors slipped past Lunar New Year.
Secondary-market listings appeared on Shopee within hours, asking premiums up to NT$18,000 over retail. The Fair Trade Commission said it would monitor abnormal pricing but has not opened a formal probe.
Why supply lags demand
Analysts cited in Saturday’s Commercial Times blame low initial hinge yields and a single assembler for the folding module. Apple told partners it will ramp output in November and December, yet warned that any glass defect rate above internal thresholds would delay batches.
Implications for Taiwan retailers
Authorized resellers in Taipei’s Xinyi district plan lottery drawings for walk-in units on launch day, October 23. Entertainment retailers hope the foldable halo lifts accessory sales even if units remain scarce, while repair shops stock extra inner-screen protectors priced near NT$3,000. For most buyers, the practical question is not whether the Duo folds, but whether their carrier contract can be pushed to February without penalty.
Telecom bundles
Carriers are pairing Duo preorders with 5G upgrade plans that waive setup fees if customers keep contracts for 30 months. Taiwan Mobile said half of its preorder queue chose titanium black, complicating spare-part planning for Apple Authorized Service Providers.
Film and television producers in Taipei are already booking Duo units for on-set fold tests, hoping the hinge design reduces glare during outdoor shoots—a niche use case Apple highlighted in its launch video but has not stocked accessories for yet.
