RR Kabel Ltd. fell 8.29 percent to Rs 2,388 in Friday’s Mumbai session, topping the Nifty 500 loser board and pulling other wire and cable makers lower as traders trimmed positions ahead of a heavy earnings calendar that begins in earnest on Monday.
Friday’s split market
The Nifty 50 still managed a 0.65 percent gain on 16 October, closing at 23,146.15, while the Sensex added 0.56 percent to 74,729.27. Beneath the headline advance, however, breadth narrowed: exchange data showed 1,915 advancing stocks against 1,404 decliners, and the Nifty Midcap 150 index slipped 0.09 percent.
Tech Mahindra rose 8.48 percent to Rs 1,790, helping the Nifty IT sub-index extend a rally that has made software exporters the dominant story of the past two weeks. HBL Engineering surged 17.27 percent and PC Jeweller gained 12.66 percent on the back of festive demand signals for gold and defence-linked capital goods.
Why cable names cooled
Analysts who track capital-goods names said RR Kabel’s slide followed a strong quarter in which investors had bet on transmission upgrades, data-centre wiring and premium FMEG products. After several sessions of outperformance relative to the broader industrials basket, short-term holders took profits even without a fresh negative company announcement.
Peer APAR Industries fell 5.21 percent to Rs 16,033 and CCL Products dropped 7.10 percent, suggesting the move was partly a rotation out of mid-cap industrial leaders into IT and select consumer names rather than a sector-specific downgrade cycle.
India VIX, a gauge of expected volatility, ticked up to 14.06, still low by historical standards but slightly higher than the prior session, which desk strategists said gave momentum traders an excuse to lock in gains before results from HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and several IT majors.
Levels traders are marking for Monday
Technical analysts cited in weekend notes pointed to 22,900 on the Nifty as near-term support tied to the 21-day exponential moving average, with resistance clustered near 23,360 at the 55-day average. A sustained break above that band, they argued, could open room toward 23,600, while a slip below 22,900 might revive fears of foreign selling returning in size.
Derivative data showed open interest building around 23,000 call options, indicating hedgers are still treating that strike as the pivot for the October series. Bank Nifty closed virtually flat at 55,844, underscoring how little credit stocks contributed to Friday’s headline gain.
Earnings as the next catalyst
With TCS having already set a constructive tone on AI-linked revenue, investors will watch whether capital-goods firms can match margin commentary when they report September numbers. Any hint that copper costs or discounting in housing wire are pressuring realisations could extend Friday’s pullback in cable names.
For now, RR Kabel’s one-day drop looks more like positioning than a fundamental reassessment, but in a market where IT has absorbed most incremental flows, industrials will need fresh order-book detail to reclaim leadership.
