Gloucestershire Police arrested a woman on suspicion of assisting an offender after two men, one carrying a sword, chased two 17-year-olds along Chalford Road beside St Peter’s High School in Tuffley, leaving one with a superficial wound.
The force was called shortly after 08:50 on Friday as parents were still dropping pupils at the secondary school. Armed units, a drone team and the National Police Air Service swept the neighbourhood while St Peter’s and Willow Primary Academy locked their gates and held classes in silence for several hours.
What pupils and parents saw
Officers said the injured teenager did not need hospital treatment, correcting an earlier briefing that suggested he had been taken for further checks. The second boy was not hurt. Both schools eventually sent children home once police were satisfied there was no continuing threat on site.
A Year 10 pupil told the BBC that staff triggered the lockdown alarm and classroom screens flashed instructions to turn off lights, close blinds and shelter on the floor. He messaged his mother about an hour in and said he had never expected a drill to become real so close to home.
Who police are still hunting
Detectives believe two white men fled on foot. One is described as late teens to early 20s, about 6ft tall with a medium to large build and white sliders. The second is around 5ft 5in, slim, dressed in black. Neither has been publicly named.
Detective Inspector Sophie Dawkins said neighbourhood officers stayed visible through the afternoon to reassure families. She asked anyone with doorbell, dashcam or mobile footage from the school-run window to come forward.
How schools responded
Local reports said additional primaries and secondaries, including Holmleigh Park High School, also restricted movement while officers searched nearby streets. Gloucestershire Constabulary’s initial release stressed that pupils inside St Peter’s remained safe and asked parents not to converge on entrances during the sweep.
The woman detained after officers stopped a vehicle remains in custody for questioning about whether she helped the suspects escape. Police have not linked the altercation to any wider extremism inquiry and continue to treat it as a fast-moving neighbourhood violence case.
What happens next
Criminal investigation staff will review CCTV along Chalford Road and neighbouring rat runs toward the M5 corridor. If either suspect is identified, charges could range from assault with a bladed article to possession offences, depending on forensic work on the sword and witness accounts of who carried it.
For now the priority is locating the two men before the weekend, when Tuffley’s streets are typically busy with youth sport and shopping traffic. Anyone who recognises the descriptions or saw the chase begin is being urged to call 101 or submit digital evidence through the force’s online portal.
