The role
InfoHandle is a general-interest digital publication with correspondents on dedicated desks. Copy still has to be edited. The senior editor in San Francisco runs the morning and afternoon list, queries reporters on what is known and what is not, and keeps headlines from promising more than the piece delivers. You will edit across business, technology, politics, and the rest of the book. You will not be asked to flatten a correspondent’s voice into house mush.
What you will do
- Edit news and features for accuracy, structure, fairness, and length before they publish.
- Build the daily list with the masthead: what leads, what waits, what is not a story yet.
- Query sourcing, numbers, and unnamed-source use; send work back when the file is thin.
- Spot legal, privacy, and standards issues, and loop in counsel when a story needs it.
- Write and edit headlines and deks that match the reporting.
- Cover breaking nights and weekends on a rotation with the rest of the San Francisco desk.
- Mentor the news assistant and intern; they should leave better than they arrived.
What you bring
- At least seven years editing daily journalism, including significant digital experience.
- A record of editing across more than one desk—business and technology are especially useful here.
- Comfort with corrections: we note material errors on the page and do not silently rewrite them.
- Ability to work Pacific hours in the San Francisco newsroom, Monday through Thursday, with on-call breaking duty.
- Authorization to work in the United States. We cannot sponsor a visa for this role.
Helpful, not required
- Experience editing newsletters or a morning briefing.
- A second language, or deep subject knowledge in markets, AI, or national security.
Pay and benefits
California requires a pay range on this posting. For this role in San Francisco, base pay is $125,000–$155,000 a year. The offer depends on experience and the scope of the work.
Full-time roles also include:
