The role
Our correspondents own their beats. San Francisco still needs a staff writer who can file on a city hearing, a company that is not already being covered, or a Saturday that will not wait until Monday. You will work across the book. You will not be hired to launch a new vertical, and you will not be asked to poach a desk that already has a correspondent.
What you will do
- Report and write news and features on general assignment, including weekends on a rotation.
- Cover San Francisco and Bay Area stories that have a clear public-interest hook, not lifestyle filler.
- Fill in when a desk is slammed or a correspondent is out.
- File cleanly, with sourcing on the page and a note on what is still unknown.
- Work with the visual editor on photographs and with copy on the last read.
- Contribute occasionally to Your Daily Update when the briefing needs a line only you have.
What you bring
- Three or more years of professional reporting, including deadline news.
- Three clips that show reporting, not only takes. At least one should be a story you had to leave the office to get.
- Comfort calling people who do not want to be called, and writing when the answer is “we don’t know yet.”
- Ability to work Pacific hours in the San Francisco newsroom, Monday through Thursday, plus a weekend rotation.
- Authorization to work in the United States. We cannot sponsor a visa for this role.
Helpful, not required
- California or Bay Area reporting experience.
- Beat experience you can still use on assignment: local government, labor, courts, or energy.
Pay and benefits
California requires a pay range on this posting. For this role in San Francisco, base pay is $82,000–$108,000 a year. The offer depends on experience and the scope of the work.
Full-time roles also include:
