The role
Every InfoHandle story carries a hero image with a credit and a license on the page. Rights in third-party photographs stay with the people who made them; work attributed to InfoHandle Image Desk or InfoHandle Visual Arts is ours. We need an editor in San Francisco who treats that line as seriously as a correction—and who will not recycle the same stock conference room across unrelated desks.
What you will do
- Assign, select, and crop story heroes so the picture matches the reporting, not a generic mood.
- Write and enforce captions, alt text, credits, and license lines before publish.
- Maintain the newsroom rules on first-party versus licensed photography, including when we do not have the rights to run a face.
- Commission illustrators and photographers for enterprise pieces; negotiate fees within budget.
- Build a simple, dated archive so editors can see what has already run.
- Work with the publishing engineer on how images are stored, named, and requested in the static site.
What you bring
- Five or more years editing photography or visuals at a news organization, magazine, or equivalent digital shop.
- Fluency in caption accuracy, model-release questions, and the difference between editorial and commercial licenses.
- A portfolio of assigned work (not only personal photography) and examples of credits you would still stand behind.
- Ability to work Pacific hours in the San Francisco newsroom, Monday through Thursday.
- Authorization to work in the United States. We cannot sponsor a visa for this role.
Helpful, not required
- Illustration commissioning, especially for science, markets, and opinion.
- Basic motion or social stills, without turning the homepage into a video player.
Pay and benefits
California requires a pay range on this posting. For this role in San Francisco, base pay is $95,000–$125,000 a year. The offer depends on experience and the scope of the work.
