NASA’s Artemis III crew spent Monday in Building 9 at Johnson Space Center running a full lunar sortie timeline—egress checks, sample bagging, and capcom callouts—months after agency leadership shifted the first crewed Moon landing to Artemis IV in 2028 and recast Artemis III as a 2027 low-Earth-orbit docking test.
Who drilled, and what they practiced
Astronauts Randy Bresnik, Frank Rubio, Andre Douglas, and European Space Agency partner Luca Parmitano walked through a five-hour surface simulation using the same geology tools NASA geologists Cindy Evans and Juliane Gross train at field camps from Norway to the Colorado mountains. Controllers in Houston mirrored the loop, practicing the tight voice loops future capcoms will use when time on the surface is measured in minutes, not hours.
NASA said the run emphasized sample documentation and contingency returns to a notional lander—a skill set still central even though Artemis III will not touch lunar regolith. The agency wants crews fluent before they rendezvous with commercial lander test articles in Earth orbit.
Program context after the reshuffle
When NASA named the Artemis III prime crew in June, officials described a mission that would dock Orion with Blue Origin and SpaceX lander pathfinders, exercising hatch interfaces and life-support handoffs without descending to the Moon. Artemis IV, now targeted for 2028, carries the first south polar landing since Apollo.
The restructuring followed hardware delays and a February 2026 program update that sidelined early Lunar Gateway dependencies. Congressional aides said Tuesday’s drill was partly aimed at reassuring appropriators that training pipelines remain busy while launch dates slide.

ESA’s PANGAEA program, which pairs astronauts with planetary scientists in Norwegian field sites, fed directly into Monday’s script. Evans and Gross, who curate Apollo samples at Johnson, have stressed that classroom time and hands-on field work must continue even when landing dates move.
NASA’s Colorado helicopter landing course, certified in late August for Artemis lander approaches, remains part of the broader syllabus. Astronauts Mark Vande Hei and Matthew Dominick helped qualify that route; Artemis III crew members are scheduled to rotate through in October.
Commercial lander partners
Blue Origin and SpaceX teams observed portions of the sim via teleconference, NASA said, focusing on how surface timelines might inform hatch and power interfaces during the Earth-orbit docking demo. Both companies are building landers for later missions; Artemis III gives them a crewed rehearsal without lunar descent risk.
Industry analysts noted that any slip in the 2027 window could cascade into lander certification fees already under strain from defense-heavy launch manifests.
What success looks like
Agency leaders want the drill report to show reduced comms delays and cleaner sample chain-of-custody than earlier Artemis II rehearsals. Public affairs officials plan to release imagery later this week, mindful that space policy debates in Washington often track visible crew progress more closely than Gantt charts.
For viewers who still equate Artemis with boots in gray dust, NASA spokespeople reiterated that the Moon remains the campaign’s destination—even if the next crewed flight stops short of the surface.

If the 2027 docking test holds, Artemis IV training will absorb Monday’s lessons into south polar traverse scenarios with upgraded suits. Until then, lunar sortie drills on Earth are the closest most of us will get to watching NASA practice for a return that now sits one mission farther out than originally sold.
Hardware still on the critical path
Spacesuit engineers at Johnson said upgraded exploration suits will join the training flow next quarter, even though Artemis III will not require a lunar walk. NASA wants crews comfortable with tools and constraints before Artemis IV assigns surface time at the south pole.
