KDCA asked roughly 1,200 patients of a Gangnam dermatology clinic to verify measles vaccination or immunity status after a confirmed case visited during peak appointment hours last Tuesday.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said the patient, a man in his 30s who had recently returned from Southeast Asia, developed fever and rash after laser treatment at the clinic’s non-surgical floor. Epidemiologists are tracing contacts who shared the waiting room between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., including staff who did not wear respirators during cosmetic consultations.

Clinic operations paused

Seoul Metropolitan Government ordered the clinic to suspend new bookings for 72 hours while ventilation systems are tested and surfaces are disinfected. KDCA deployed a mobile vaccination bus to Gangnam Station on Monday offering MMR shots to walk-ins who cannot reach their primary care offices quickly. The clinic’s name was withheld in public advisories to reduce stigma, but address details were shared with affected patients by encrypted text.

Measles elimination status in Korea depends on rapid ring vaccination. The country reported 47 imported-linked cases this year before this cluster, mostly among unvaccinated adults who missed catch-up campaigns during the pandemic. Dermatology settings are high risk because patients sit unmasked for facial procedures.

What patients should do

KDCA guidance splits contacts into three tiers. Those in the treatment room with the index case should isolate and call the 1339 hotline for prophylactic immunoglobulin if unvaccinated. Waiting-room contacts who stayed more than 30 minutes should monitor fever for 21 days and avoid pregnant family members if rash appears. Casual passers in the lobby are considered low risk but encouraged to confirm two-dose MMR history.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare said national vaccine stock is sufficient for surge demand, contradicting social media rumors of shortages at private travel clinics. Hospitals in Bundang and Songpa reported higher triage calls Monday morning, mostly from anxious cosmetic patients without symptoms.

Travel and import context

The index patient told investigators he received one MMR dose as a child but skipped a booster recommended before backpacking trips. KDCA reiterated that adults born between 1970 and 1990 may have incomplete records and should check antibody titers before elective procedures in crowded facilities.

Airport quarantine screens fever but cannot catch measles during the incubation period. This case will fuel debate about whether cosmetic medical tourism districts need dedicated ventilation standards beyond general outpatient rules.

Outlook

If no secondary cases appear within two incubation periods, the clinic can reopen with mandatory masks in waiting areas and staggered appointments. If transmission spreads, KDCA may expand vaccination to all Gangnam residents in certain postal codes, a tactic used in a 2019 church-linked outbreak.

For now, the story is a paperwork and logistics scramble: 1,200 people checking childhood immunization cards because one traveler with rash chose the wrong week for laser resurfacing.
